Common Misconceptions About a Liberal Arts Education
I’ve had the pleasure of teaching many students through their middle school and high school careers. Almost every year, around the time everyone is making their college lists, I have a student ask me “Do you think a liberal arts education is worth it?”
My answer is a resounding yes. The liberal arts is often misunderstood. I’d like to help demystify some myths about the liberal arts.
Myth 1: “The Liberal Arts” is Only About Creative Fields Like Fine Art or Theatre
While liberal arts education does encompass the arts, it extends far beyond creative disciplines. It encompasses a wide range of subjects, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and more. Liberal arts education emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, encouraging students to explore connections between different fields of study and to think critically about complex issues from multiple perspectives
Myth 2: A Liberal Arts Education Isn't Practical for Career Success
Many people think that a liberal arts education isn’t best suited for financial success. However, this kind of education offers crucial practical skills, including critical thinking, communication, adaptability, and cultural competency - all of which are highly valued in today’s globalized job market.
Myth 3: Liberal Arts Degrees Are Less Valuable Than STEM Degrees
While STEM fields certainly play a crucial role in driving innovation and technological advancement, the liberal arts are equally essential for fostering creativity, innovation, and interdisciplinary thinking. In fact, a liberal arts perspective can translate to a variety of roles within technology and science companies. Liberal arts graduates are uniquely positioned to answer some of the toughest questions - What role does cultural context play in the design and implementation of AI systems? How can principles of design improve user experience in mobile applications? What ethical considerations are involved in algorithm development?
Myth 4: Liberal Arts Education is Academically Easy
On the contrary, liberal arts education is intellectually rigorous and challenging. Because the liberal arts is inherently interdisciplinary, it asks students to engage with complex ideas and look at them from different points of views.
Myth 5: Liberal Arts Education is Irrelevant in Today's Digital Age
Today, we are faced with a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Automation and artificial intelligence have become driving factors in many industries the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and empathize with others becomes increasingly valuable. Human-centered skills are more relevant than ever.
A liberal arts education is a vital tool in today’s and tomorrow’s world, transformative to our student’s intellectual curiosity, personal growth and professional success.
